Cricket  January 21st 2012

It was a very successful weekend for the club with 3 out of 4 senior sides grabbing a win.

The A grade continued their good run of form since Christmas with a comprehensive win over Gilbert Valley at the Dog Track. Batting first the boys looked in a spot of bother with the score on 2 for 18 but Jamie McCafferty and Aaron King stepped up again and put together a 147 run partnership in good time. Kingy was dismissed for 59 but this only brought Willy Serle to the crease and he didn't waste any time before hitting the ball to all parts of the oval for a quickfire 34. Caff kept the scoreboard ticking over at the other end and knocked up his first ton for the club and helped the boys set Gilbert Valley a big chase of 264. The Gilbert Valley openers got off to a flying start but they were soon knocked over and the wickets started falling regularly as they were dismissed for 162. Aaron King was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 26 while Ty Stock and Willy Serle each grabbed two wickets.

The B grade also had a successful day with their win over Greenock at Greenock. We batted first and were able to recover after the loss of a couple of early wickets to be only three wickets down at drinks thanks to Corey Chester (22) and Matt Perry (36). Some more wickets fell after drinks and it looked like it might be a tough day at the office before Lee Hughes stepped up and made a quick 45 while Ryan Harris continued his good form with 19 not out to give us a total of 198. Our fielding effort was not the best however and 6 dropped catches meant that Greenock were able to put up a bit of a fight before being dismissed for 134. Jason King led the way with 4 wickets while Michael Davis grabbed a couple as well.

The C Grade made the journey to Truro and came away with another win in a close game. Again we batted first and were able to post 148 from our 40 overs thanks to some good batting by Greg Kemp with 40. Shane Dawe and Mark Hermann gave good support with 29 and 20 respectively. We were able to take regular wickets and managed to knock Truro over for 115. Nick Heinze was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets while Matt Knight and Sam McMillan grabbed a couple each.

The D grade missed out on a win against Tanunda at Xavier. The opposition put together a few good partnerships on their way to a score of 203 with Hamish Hutton and Tim Heinze each grabbing three wickets. The batting effort was not up to scratch with only three batsmen reaching double figures. Well done to one of our juniors, Matt Stewart, who top scored with 21 not out.

Our Women's A Grade were defending 259 against Craigmore at Gawler Oval.  We struggled to take wickets early and did not take our first wicket until Craigmore were 116.  At the end of their 32 overs Craigmore finished on 4/182.  Jess Patrick picked up her first wicket of a short career, and then another wicket in the same over to finish with 2/45 from 5 overs.  Nicole Mentha was the other wicket taker, as well as a direct hit runout.  Another solid win with only 2 games to go.

The under 16’s match was a showdown between the two Gawler Central sides at the dog track
and the game is right in the balance after the Gold side was able to post 151 from their 40 overs. Brandon Swan continued his good for with 28 and he had good support from Vaughan Kroon with 25 and Josh Neilson with 23. Adrian Connelly, Hayden Ingram and Jay Frahm all got starts as well. For the black team Tod Stansborough, Jesse Lamb and Jonah Grindlay all got two wickets.

The Under 14’s also had a good day in their match against Eudunda/Robertstown. We batted first and were able to post 142 from our 25 overs thanks to some great batting from Matt Stewart who hit 50 not out and Brandon Acton who made 28. We then bowled and had them all out for 82 in a good all-round effort. Jarrod Kroon led the way with the ball with 3 for 18 while Jordy Saunders also grabbed a wicket
