FOOTBALL 2015 – Week 1

It’s back and don’t we love it. The Tigers had a great day at Willaston on Saturday getting off to a great start with the Under 13’s winning 10.7 to 0.1. The boys played great football from the first bounce and never looked in danger of defeat. Best players for the Tigers were Corey Smith (3 goals), Ethan Herzick (3 goals), Ross Grady and Jack Nicholls.

The under 15’s tried hard all day but let themselves down in front of goal. They actually had 1 more scoring shot but finished up going down to the Donnybrooks by 24 points in a very good standard game. Our better players were Brad Pilkington, Liam Sutton, Josh Denton and Josh Needham.

In the 17’s had a great first half against the Willaston boys but let them back into the game a little in the third quarter. In the end we got over the line by 22 points in a very hard fought, entertaining game. New Coach Tom Lane was full of praise for his young chargers and is looking forward to a big season from the boys. Best for the Tigers was a lad playing his first game for the club in Alex Robertson who led the ruck all day. Others to play well were Brodi Mathews, Adam Byster, Blayke Lane, Brandon Hubbard and Hayden Reynolds

The Reserves powered away from the Donnybrooks from the first bounce to record a 15 goal win in near perfect conditions. The Tigers dominated every line and were never troubled. Another new lad to the club Ben Walter showed he has what it takes to play A grade football for the club with a hard running game from the middle and was judged our best player. Others to show early season form were Josh Edwards, Brandon Downie (up from the 17’s), Adam Cox, Ryan Wenham and Luke Stockdale.

We were always favorites coming into the game against Willaston and at half time it was plain to see why when we led by 59 points and were doing it on the bit but as is always the case when these 2 sides play the Donnybrooks came back hard in the third quarter and game turned into an arm wrestle. We were never in danger of losing the game but probably had to work harder many of us would have thought at half tiime. The human blanket Jake Asher was judged our best with a great display against Ashley Fry while Tom Dunne (7 goals), Kalon Heinze, Casey Thomas, Kirk Heberle and Joel Latimer were also high in the best players. Congratulations to Paul Searle and Matt Stewart in playing their first A grade games for the club, both lads were very serviceable and kicked goals in their first games. The club retained the Stephen Connelly Cup as a result of the victory.

This week we take on the Nuriootpa Tigers in our first home game of the season under lights. This will be a great way to start our home games of the season with all games starting 3 hours later than normal. The A grade will start at 5.20pm and finishing around 8pm. The club will be serving meals on the night beginning at 6pm and running through until 8.30pm.
